Deep and Dark and Dangerous
by Mary Downing Hahn

This book is a scary mystery.  However, it is not very scary.  I think anyone ages eight to twelve will love this book.  It is similar to Wait Till Helen Comes and Stolen Children.  Deep and Dark and Dangerous is a nominee for the 2012 Nutmeg award. This book will have you turning pages day and night.

Thirteen year old Ali is looking through boxes when she comes across a torn photo.  She recognizes her mom and her Aunt Dulcie as children at their house in Maine.  But the photo is torn, and Ali discovers a third girl in the photo.  All that she can see is the girl's shoulder and a few strands of hair.  The back of the photo is no help, either.  It says Claire, Dulcie, and T.  When Aunt Dulcie visits, she invites Ali to come to Maine with her to babysit her daughter, Emma.  Ali is dying to go.  Her mother is skeptical, but her dad and Dulcie insist.

In Maine, Emma is a sweet little angel  That is, until Sissy shows up.  Sissy is a mean, nasty girl and a terrible influence on Emma.  Ali is sure that Sissy knows about the torn photo, why her mom and aunt stopped coming to Maine, and why they pretend they don't know anything when they hear the name Teresa Abbott.  Ali is dying to find out what Sissy knows, even though Dulcie has insisted that Emma can't play with Sissy.  Could Sissy be a ghost?  Read on to find out about the mystery of the torn photo.
